The Bakkhai Blog
The Bakkhai was originally written by Euripides, but it translated to English by Robert Bagg. The way Robert translated this is in the form of a play, with 2 main characters- Dinoysos and Pentheus. The play begins with Dinoysos returning to his hometown of Thebes after going around and telling about the god Bakkhai and how great he is. He comes back to take revenge on the people that had his mother killed. With Dinoysos teaching about another God, Pentheus, the king, gets angry and fights with him to seize this nonsense.
For my review, this book is perfect the way it tells the story. It has a pretty good plot and a twist at the end. In the beginning, like any other book, not much is told. The farther you get in the story, the more you learn about the mythological characters and how they pertain to the main problem. One thing I did not like about The Bakkhai is that it did skip around a lot from location to location. Even though it is a play and that’s what happens, they could’ve done a bit better. Another thing I didn’t like reading was the Chorus’ parts. They were just so boring and I couldn’t stand reading them. Overall, The Bakkhai is an amazingly good book if you’re into mythology, and I would recommend it to young adult audiences.
